SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Book talk “Zionism in Translation. Encounters in the German-Hebrew=0D=0AArchive”
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Prof. Na'ama Rokem=0D=0A=0D=0AIn her new book, Zionism in Translation: Encounters in the=0D=0AGerman-Hebrew Archive, Na’ama Rokem investigates written exchanges=0D=0Aby a range of literary twentieth century authors, including Hannah=0D=0AArendt, Gershom Scholem, Yehuda Amichai, Ludwig Strauss, Erich=0D=0AAuerbach, Walter Benjamin, Leah Goldberg, Peter Szondi, Paul Celan,=0D=0Aand Tuvia Ruebner. This remarkable bilingual archive encompasses not=0D=0Aonly letters but also drafts, reviews, and other ephemeral documents.=0D=0AWritten in German and Hebrew, these documents were sent to and from=0D=0AJerusalem, primarily in the decades following 1948.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe writers at the center of Rokem’s study contend with the=0D=0Agenocidal violence that brought the rich historical relation between=0D=0AGerman and Hebrew to a seeming end. They also grapple, in different=0D=0Aways, with the new reality in Israel/Palestine in the wake of the=0D=0Afounding of the State of Israel and the Palestinian Nakba. The=0D=0Abilingual conversation that crosses over between German and Hebrew in=0D=0Athese letters thus centers around the question of Jewish fate in the=0D=0Atwentieth century and is immersed in negotiations about Jewish=0D=0Anationalism, the Zionist movement, and the possibilities of Jewish=0D=0Apoetry. In the space between German and Hebrew, Rokem argues, the=0D=0Aprotagonists of her study articulate forms of ambivalence and doubt=0D=0Athat remain absent from their published writings.=0D=0A=0D=0AIn this book presentation, Rokem will discuss forms of belonging and=0D=0Aresistance that emerged in relation to the Zionist movement throughout=0D=0Athe twentieth century, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of=0D=0AJewish nationalism and its discontents.=0D=0A=0D=0ANa’ama Rokem teaches Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the=0D=0AUniversity of Chicago, where she has served as director of the Joyce=0D=0AZ. and Jacob Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies and as chair of the=0D=0ADepartment of Comparative Literature. Zionism in Translation:=0D=0AEncounters in the German-Hebrew Archive (University of Chicago Press,=0D=0A2026) is her second book. Her first book, Prosaic Conditions: Heinrich=0D=0AHeine and the Spaces of Zionist Literature, was published by=0D=0ANorthwestern University Press in 2013. Currently, she is working as=0D=0Aone of the co-editors of the forthcoming Volume IV.2 of the Critical=0D=0AEdition of the Complete Works of Hannah Arendt (Essays and Short=0D=0AWritings on Jewish Politics) and starting a new research project on=0D=0AZionism and pedagogy.
