And that foundation rumbles=0D=0Apowerfully. With Kanaan, we’re approaching earthquake territory.=0D=0A=0D=0AWith their grand and eclectic new album, Kanaan digs even deeper into=0D=0Athe diverse genres that have defined their music. The melodic sections=0D=0Aboast strong, catchy qualities; the psychedelic parts are wilder and=0D=0Amore unhinged; and the retro, analog sounds feel vintage and=0D=0Aunpolished. And when it comes to riffs, there are no weight loss drugs=0D=0Ainvolved here—they’re heavier than ever.=0D=0A=0D=0AYet, even as the band continues to evolve, their distinct Kanaan sound=0D=0Aremains intact. The band themselves describe the album as a=0D=0Acelebration of everything they’ve achieved musically and=0D=0Aartistically so far—but also everything they’ve experienced and=0D=0Aaccomplished as close friends playing together.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe members have grown up, but their musical curiosity, creativity,=0D=0Aand drive to create remain stronger than ever. They=0D=0Adescribe their time in Halden’s Athletic Sound as a kind of black=0D=0Ahole where only the band, engineer Dag Erik Johansen, and the music=0D=0Aexisted.=0D=0A=0D=0AAs if life wasn’t busy enough for Kanaan’s members, with frequent=0D=0Atouring and annual album releases, they find time for countless side=0D=0Aprojects. The trio comes together in the expanded orchestra Full=0D=0AEarth, where they play music written by drummer Ingvald André=0D=0AVassbø. Vassbø also plays in the experimental psych/free jazz=0D=0Aproject Sex Magick Wizards and has recently had a stint with legends=0D=0AMotorpsycho. Bassist Eskild Myrvoll lays down fierce bass lines in the=0D=0Ahardcore band Daufødt and, until recently, in the black metal band=0D=0ABlodkvalt. Guitarist Ask Vatn Strøm has long played cheerful,=0D=0Agroove-heavy jazz-infused indie with ¡BangBang Watergun! and groovy=0D=0Ablues in Soft City. In the dream pop band Cloud Cuckoo, he serves as=0D=0Athe lead guitarist.
