SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:GRANDMAS HOUSE (UK) + Support: LILAC ATTITUDE (CH)
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Like the ominous skies before a storm, Bristol-based foursome Grandmas=0D=0AHouse's debut, Baby You're A Winner, captures both the light and dark=0D=0Aof human connection through riotous rock anthems, whipsmart=0D=0Astorytelling, and moments of startling tenderness. As the interlocking=0D=0Aguitar and choral harmonies of title track ‘Baby You’re A=0D=0AWinner’ swirl into your subconscious, you might be expecting an easy=0D=0Aintroduction from Grandmas House. But this Bristol-based foursome’s=0D=0Afoundations are built on dancing the fine line between dark and light.=0D=0AThis mission is deadly apparent from the moment Zoë Zinsmeister’s=0D=0Arumbling basslines kick in. The band’s debut is heavy with opposing=0D=0Aelements: melodic and abrasive, intimate and chaotic, carefully=0D=0Acomposed yet riotously riveting.=0D=0AAnd that’s no truer than in their standout vocal delivery. Guitarist=0D=0AYasmin Berndt’s signature snarl cuts through the UK’s current=0D=0Apost-punk landscape (but, if pushed, recalls the unpolished growl of=0D=0AFontaines DC’s Grian Chatten). Drummer Poppy Dodgson adds a striking=0D=0Asecond lead vocal presence, while bassist Zoë Zinsmeister brings a=0D=0Athird layer to the group’s often sinister harmonies.=0D=0ABand founders Berndt and Dodgson met at university, bonding over=0D=0Aleft-field indie acts like Shame and Goat Girl. But it was another=0D=0Afoursome who encouraged them to pick up their own instruments.=0D=0A“Seeing The Big Moon live before we’d played any shows inspired us=0D=0Aso much,” recalls Dodgson. Relocating to Bristol, the pair moved in=0D=0Atogether and recruited Zinsmeister on bass and, later, Polly Jessett=0D=0Aon lead guitar. The catalyst to perform came from the heart of the=0D=0Awelcoming, creative community, though. “We told the guy who owns The=0D=0AThunderbolt we were writing songs, and he was like, ‘Right, you’ve=0D=0Agot a set!’” laughs Dodgson. “Without that push, I don’t know=0D=0Aif we would have been brave enough.” After a handful of EP releases=0D=0Aand time testing new material out on the road, Grandmas House headed=0D=0Ainto the studio to lay down their debut with producer Ali Chant (PJ=0D=0AHarvey, Yard Act, Perfume Genius) to translate the intensity of the=0D=0Aband’s live shows into something more expansive. “Our music is=0D=0Ahard to capture on recordings as it's got so much energy,” says=0D=0ABerndt. “Sometimes we'd be like, 'This is a lot more powerful live.=0D=0AHow can we make it as powerful?’”=0D=0AThat power exists in Grandmas House’s ability to handle life’s big=0D=0Amoments with tenderness amongst the rollicking riffs. Echoing Big=0D=0AThief’s knack for vivid storytelling, the band's debut paints a keen=0D=0Aportrait of love, grief, and the bittersweet balance between sadness=0D=0Aand catharsis, as Dodgson explains. “We wrote this album about the=0D=0Aexistential crisis of going through life. It’s about love and=0D=0Ainfatuation, but also about grief and loneliness. It’s emotional,=0D=0Apowerful, and a good time all at once.”=0D=0AThe record also gives voice to physical vulnerability and emotional=0D=0Aimbalance. Thunderous lead single ‘DOG’ reflects on chronic=0D=0Aillness and dismissive medical treatment, with Berndt spitting=0D=0Abitterly. “Got you growling through gritted teeth / The doctor=0D=0Aalways said this pill is all you'll ever need.” The surprisingly=0D=0Asombre tones of ‘Soaked’ explore queer love, as Jessett’s tender=0D=0Aguitar lines soar through into a cathartic release akin to Marika=0D=0AHackman’s Big Sigh. But there are also huge rock chops at play=0D=0Aacross the record, too. =0D=0A‘Dance’ is a live set staple drawing inspiration from the band’s=0D=0Arecent tour support alongside Midlands giants, Big Special. Elsewhere,=0D=0A‘The Table’ was also honed out on the road, and confronts the end=0D=0Aof a relationship. “We've been playing that one for such a long=0D=0Atime. It started much more punky and has since become a big rock=0D=0Aanthem,” picks up Dodgson.=0D=0AEqually abrasive, ‘Next Big Hit (Choo Choo)’ robustly rallies=0D=0Aagainst the scoffing of women in the music industry with crushing=0D=0Adistortion over Berndt’s deadpan delivery, and a needling lead line=0D=0Athat slams into you with the force of a freight train. Even the=0D=0Aalbum’s softer moments feel intensely physical. ‘Blue Oblivion’=0D=0Adescribes these all-consuming feelings as a “stone at the bottom of=0D=0Amy lungs,” while standout ‘Taxidermy’ insists on wearing their=0D=0Alove interest like a coat. Alongside the deeply human connections —=0D=0Agrief wrapped up in illness (‘I Miss That House’) and the=0D=0Aheartbreaking acceptance of letting go (‘How It Is’) — there’s=0D=0Aa strong current of nature running through the record, which Dodgson=0D=0Atraces back to her love of poet Mary Oliver. In ‘Baby You’re A=0D=0AWinner’, Berndt sows the sentiment lyrically, “If I planted a=0D=0Aflower every time that I missed ya / I could walk through my garden,=0D=0Atrying to forget you.” In Grandmas House, a glimmer of hope peeks=0D=0Athrough towards brighter days. As Jessett admits with album closer,=0D=0A‘Spring’, “We wanted an emotional, stripped back moment on the=0D=0Aalbum and wrote this with that intention.” For all the darkness=0D=0Athreaded through Baby You’re A Winner, moments of light emerge in=0D=0Athe form of unwavering friendship and pointed storytelling about what=0D=0Ait feels like to truly be alive.=0D=0A=0D=0Awww.grandmashouse.co.uk [https://www.grandmashouse.co.uk/]=0D=0A=0D=0ALilac Attitude steht für: Pogo-jumping rhythms +++ Noisy licks +++=0D=0Adreckig-kitschige vocals=0D=0A+++ Diversity & hope for planet earth.=0D=0AIhr Name ist Lilac Attitude, und das meinen sie auch so!
