SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:fantasy of a broken heart
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:mmediately bonding over the The Flaming Lips and Fullmetal Alchemist:=0D=0ABrotherhood, the two have intermittently lived and worked together=0D=0Asince, in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, but mostly on the road in-between,=0D=0Aas shifting parts of pirate crews traversing the country and playing=0D=0Ain bands Water From Your Eyes and This is Lorelei, among many more.=0D=0A=0D=0Athe fantasy of a broken heart began on these journeys, in moments=0D=0Astolen while wedged up between roommates and band members in=0D=0Aoverstuffed apartments and the cramped backseats of cars. The creative=0D=0Aoutlet of two working musicians, fantasy was first just Al and Bailey=0D=0Awriting songs, using music to track the vicissitudes of their lives=0D=0Aand relationships - with each other and the sprawling ecosystem of=0D=0Amusicians of which they’re a part.=0D=0A=0D=0Athe fantasy of a broken heart’ s new EP, Chaos Practitioner, follows=0D=0Atheir explosive debut album, Feats of Engineering (2024), building on=0D=0Athe latter’s kooky but sincere narrative chops while charting new=0D=0Aaural directions. The album spotlights the duo’s musical ecosystem=0D=0Awith cameos from friends old and new, including Jackson Katz of Brutus=0D=0AVIII, Nick Rattigan of Current Joys, and Kelsea Feder of Blums. Mixed=0D=0Aby Nate Amos (Water From Your Eyes and This is Lorelei) and mastered=0D=0Aby Ruben Radlauer (Model/Actriz), the six-song collection breaks just=0D=0Apast 19 minutes, but in that short span guides the listener through a=0D=0Afrenetic freefall. The album, as its title suggests, careens between=0D=0Acandid reflections on the real world and forays into the haze of=0D=0Adaydreams—leaving the border open for exploration. “Is it magic or=0D=0Ajust mystery?” they ask rhetorically on the EP’s third track, Have=0D=0Aa Nice Time Life, a nonsensical-by-design mediation on the danger and=0D=0Apromise of getting addicted to the thrill.=0D=0A=0D=0ABailey’s husky baritone whispers, shouts, and croons, Al’s airy=0D=0Avocals twang and soar transcendent, their voices drifting in and out=0D=0Aof conversation with each other. A transient=0D=0Adialogue between the two runs through the tracks, often out of sync=0D=0Aand existing sometimes in absentia. Chaos Practitioner’s meditative=0D=0Aand surreal elements are grounded by driving percussion and shimmering=0D=0Atwangs of harp, while ethereal synth layers maintain the dreamlike=0D=0Afoundation. The final track, We Confront the Demon in Mysterious Ways,=0D=0Aoffers a tentative resolution to the struggle, between one’s inner=0D=0Alife and the real world, laid out in the preceding tracks, with Al and=0D=0ABailey recreating a never-ending argument between two lovers, at=0D=0Aturnsaccusatory and defensive. “You wanted real love but you got me=0D=0Ainstead,” Al sings. “Does it feel good when you hurt me back?”=0D=0Areplies Bailey.=0D=0A=0D=0AAl and Bailey call Chaos Practitioner their “most bedroom collection=0D=0Ato date.” It was crafted by close friends in close quarters, on the=0D=0Afloors of hotel rooms and living room couches between Brooklyn, Mexico=0D=0ACity, and Los Angeles. Though shaped by the surrealist endeavors of=0D=0A70s prog-rock and late-90s dream pop, fantasy’s output is ultimately=0D=0Atethered to reality, to music as sculpted by years of live=0D=0Aperformance. A maximalist diatribe, their sound is guided by whatever=0D=0Athe fuck they want, but always anchored by the emotional core of the=0D=0Acentral relationship.=0D=0A=0D=0AAl says that Bailey is the gas. They’re steering, maybe (sometimes)=0D=0Apressing lightly on the brakes. Indulge in their fantasy, put out your=0D=0Acigarette and pack your bags, or don’t, and come along for the ride.=0D=0A=0D=0AWhen the world sputtered to a halt in 2020, the whirlwind stopped. The=0D=0Apair deposited themselves in Al’s native Los Angeles, taking the=0D=0Aopportunity to hunker down with their twinned sound and commit to=0D=0Afantasy as a fully-fledged band. They looked back on the time they had=0D=0Aput into their careers and each other, harnessing their powers to=0D=0Aconfront the ambiguity of the transitional and draw coherence from a=0D=0Amyriad of perspectives.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe resulting debut album, Feats of Engineering, is both sweeping epic=0D=0Aand a candid record of everyday moments, an emotional scrapbook filled=0D=0Awith things that happened and things that didn’t. It begins,=0D=0Aappropriately, with the slow, anxious beeping of a car door left ajar,=0D=0Agradually cut off by the dignified tones of a synthetic organ, which=0D=0Acarry you nearly to rapture before the song launches into toe-tapping=0D=0Aabandon: “welcome to the fantasy of a broken heart,” Bailey=0D=0Aintones. This frenetic dynamic marks the rest of the album, which=0D=0Aweaves moments of intimate ambience with bursts of lush orchestration,=0D=0Athe heart-thumping bravado of drums and guitar confronting baroque=0D=0Adignity.=0D=0A=0D=0AThough shaped by the surrealist endeavors of 70s prog-rock and=0D=0Alate-90s dream pop, and the logic-eschewing rules of animated worlds,=0D=0Athe album is ultimately tethered to reality, to music as sculpted by=0D=0Ayears of live performance. A maximalist diatribe, its sound is guided=0D=0Aby whatever the fuck it wants, but anchored by the emotional core of=0D=0Aits central relationship. Lyrics careen between the silly and the=0D=0Asincere: from cigarinos and »bibby bops'« to euphoric art and=0D=0Agrecian pillars. Bailey’s husky baritone whispers, shouts, and=0D=0Acroons, Al’s airy vocals twang and soar transcendent, their voices=0D=0Adrifting in and out of conversation with each other. The title track=0D=0Ais defined by a rare and total harmony, »What’s your=0D=0Aintention?/Locomotion in detention/Think of jumping off a broken=0D=0Abridge suspension/In Middletown«, Al and Bailey sing in unison,=0D=0Arecalling a bad day in Connecticut.=0D=0A=0D=0AWhiffs of Americana grasped from cross-country voyages appear in=0D=0Apanorama, alongside moments of conflict and collusion, and sometimes=0D=0Aflashes of epiphany. Truth is buried just beneath the veneer of=0D=0Afiction, but these aren’t love songs, more a bundle of snapshots=0D=0Afrom the ever-shifting dynamics between two people and their=0D=0Arespective worlds.=0D=0A=0D=0AAl says that Bailey is the gas. They’re steering, maybe (sometimes)=0D=0Apressing lightly on the brakes. Indulge in their fantasy, put out your=0D=0Acigarette and pack your bags, or don’t, and come along for the ride.=0D=0A=0D=0Ahttps://youtu.be/l8wbmyurRmc?si=qzvg1Yy91D4QKcod=0D=0A
