SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Den Der Hale
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Enigmatic Swedish post-psych band Den Der Hale are known for their=0D=0Aboundary-pushing soundscapes.=0D=0AThe group are currently gearing up to release their highly anticipated=0D=0Asecond album, Pastoral Light, on=0D=0AFebruary 2nd 2024 via FatCat Records. This album showcases the band's=0D=0Aability to meld diverse creative=0D=0Ainspirations into a seamless and experimental sonic journey,=0D=0Atranscending genres and defying=0D=0Aconventions.=0D=0ADen Der Hale was formed in 2019 by Pontus Lindskogen (guitar, vocals),=0D=0AMax Bredberg (guitar), Axel=0D=0ANelson (drums), Mimosa Baker (synth, vocals), and Ejner Trenter=0D=0A(bass). Operating from various rehearsal=0D=0Aspaces in Malmö, the band quickly gained recognition in Scandinavia=0D=0Awith a series of singles, followed by=0D=0Atheir debut album, Harsyra, in 2021.=0D=0ATheir unique fusion of folk-inspired kraut, gritty psych, and=0D=0Apost-rock led to the band’s creation of the=0D=0Aterm "post-psych" which perfectly encapsulates their distinctive=0D=0Asound. Itinerant rhythms and atonal=0D=0Amelodies are filtered through heavy effects, harsh layers of noise are=0D=0Acontrasted by animate bass lines=0D=0Aand propulsive percussions. In this seemingly chaotic amalgam, there=0D=0Ais always a red line, and often each=0D=0Amusical output becomes a synthesis, a whole.=0D=0AOverall, Pastoral Light was inspired by the proliferation of mankind=0D=0Aand the human impact on the=0D=0Aenvironment. Serving as a plea to natural forces for redemption,=0D=0APastoral Light is a profound musical=0D=0Ajourney that will leave listeners both spellbound and reflective.=0D=0AThe album opens with ‘A Part of Wrath and Stone’, one of the=0D=0Aband's earliest compositions. “This is the=0D=0Atrack Pontus used to lure Ejner into the band. In many ways it is a=0D=0Ashowcase of our different musical=0D=0Abackgrounds, with its blend of aggressive kraut, atmospheric vocals=0D=0Aand atonal riffs,” explains the band.=0D=0ALead single ‘The Horse From Turin’ was originally inspired by Bela=0D=0ATarr’s film ‘The Turin Horse’. The film’s=0D=0Atitle refers to the whipping of a horse that is rumoured to have=0D=0Acaused the mental breakdown of=0D=0Aphilosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. “Originally based on an acoustic=0D=0Abass line, ‘The Horse from Turin’ soon=0D=0Agrew into a beast of its own through copious jam sessions”, they=0D=0Asay. “Thematically it began as a vague=0D=0Aidea based on Bela Tarr’s film’, but just as the original bass=0D=0Aline, the lyrics soon took new directions.”=0D=0AAtmospheric track ‘The Frail’ was written during the band's=0D=0Arecording process, featuring custom-made=0D=0Ainstruments and experimental soundscapes. "To achieve the eerie=0D=0Aatmospheric drone that underpins the=0D=0Aentire song, we wanted to create a very long bass string which could=0D=0Abe used both percussively with a=0D=0Acontact microphone, as well as a bow. We experimented with a steel=0D=0Awire which was attached to different=0D=0Apoints in a room, until we found the proper length and tension to get=0D=0Athe correct pitch," explains the band.=0D=0A‘Donkey Skin’ is another of the band's early compositions, which=0D=0Aalso takes inspiration from cinema. “The=0D=0Asong takes its name and lyrical theme from the eponymous French film=0D=0Afrom 1970, and although it was=0D=0Aconsidered to have it be a fully acoustic track, the dreamy atmosphere=0D=0Aof the film soon bled into the=0D=0Asongwriting, and a more effect-driven and ethereal sound was decided=0D=0Aon,” explains Den Der Hale.=0D=0AWith 'Pastoral Light', the Swedish post-psych quintet has crafted an=0D=0Aalbum that transcends the ordinary,=0D=0Ainviting listeners to embark on a journey that delves into the=0D=0Aintricacies of human existence and our=0D=0Arelationship with the natural world.=0D=0A
