Architecture students from the IU International University Campus Hamburg are presenting an exhibition showcasing the architectural competitions held from the 1950s to the present day for the design of the St. Nikolai Memorial as a central site of remembrance. The exhibition focuses on the development of the memorial as the result of a multifaceted process in which architectural designs, societal debates, and considerations of the culture of remembrance are closely intertwined. Based on historical competition procedures, the exhibition traces key stages in the discussions surrounding the future design and significance of the site. Selected designs, documents, and materials are on display, illustrating both the breadth of submitted concepts and the sometimes controversial debates.
