At the age of 16, Marie Jacquot traded her tennis racket for a conductor’s baton – today, she is regarded as one of the most exciting conductors of her generation. Following positions in Würzburg, Düsseldorf and Vienna, she now begins her first season as Chief Conductor of the WDR Sinfonieorchester.
»I am inspired by the ensemble’s stylistic versatility and by its unwavering commitment to achieving the highest possible musical quality,« says Jacquot. In her inaugural concert, she reveals this potential in a multifaceted programme spanning late Romanticism and the present day.
The evening opens with Richard Wagner’s solemn overture to »Tannhäuser«. This is followed by Thierry Escaich’s viola concerto »La Nuit des Chants«, a work that combines influences from Navajo music with French colour and refinement. The soloist is Antoine Tamestit, for whom the concerto was written. The concert concludes with Camille Saint-Saëns’s monumental Organ Symphony, featuring Iveta Apkalna at the »king of all instruments«.
