The state music councils in Germany have chosen the accordion as the instrument of the year 2026. To mark this occasion, the Hamburg State Youth Music School and the Hamburg State Music Council are hosting Accordion Day. A variety of workshops for all ages and skill levels will showcase the accordion's versatility and offer the opportunity to explore the instrument in depth and make music together.
Workshop 1: Discovering and Getting to Know the Accordion for Children 5-7 Years (No prior knowledge required) Led by: Natalia Müller 10:30 am - 12:30 pm In this workshop, children will playfully explore the instrument and discover its diverse sound possibilities. Using the accordion and Orff instruments, they will create a sound story together. Parents are not permitted in this workshop. (Afterwards, children and their parents are welcome to listen to the rehearsals of Workshops 2 and 3 to get a feel for playing the accordion.)
2nd Workshop: We play accordion together - children 7-13 years (with prior knowledge) - led by Bernd Butz, 10 am - 1 pm. This workshop offers the perfect opportunity for all those who have always wanted to play together with other children in an accordion orchestra. Through exciting pieces and suitable exercises, the basics of playing together will be learned.
3rd Workshop: Making Music Together is Fun for Juniors 13-16 Years (With Prior Knowledge) Led by: Arlette Wardys 10am - 1pm This workshop explores the encounter between old composers and modern accordion techniques. Two pieces from Vladimir Subitzky's "Music for Children" cycle will be explored: "Lament" in the style of Sergei Prokofiev and the "March," reminiscent of the music of Georges Bizet and Igor Stravinsky.
Workshop 4: Making Music Without Sheet Music - Creating a New Piece of Music (Participants of Workshops 2 and 3) Led by Natalia Müller and Bernd Butz 2-5 pm In this workshop, participants will collaboratively develop a piece of music. Through experimentation with tones, rhythms, melodies, sounds, and noises, creative musical ideas will emerge and be implemented together. The workshop fosters expression, musical self-confidence, and teamwork.
5th Workshop: Chamber Music with Piazzolla Advanced students (ages 16 and up) Led by Arlette Wardys 2-5 pm In this workshop, participants will immerse themselves in the world of Argentine tango.
