Artistic musical performances have always captivated audiences worldwide by combining deep emotion with extraordinary physical execution. Behind every masterful interpretation lies an extraordinary biological transformation: years of intensive practice from childhood onwards reshape the brains and bodies of musicians. This specific transformation enables virtuosos to master an extensive repertoire with rapid, nuanced dexterity, precise posture and seamless synchronisation of body and instrument. Beyond maintaining their skills, pianists constantly push their physical and mental limits to fully express their musical creativity.
Drawing on neuroscience and biomechanics, this lecture by Shinichi Furuya sheds light on the mechanisms underpinning musical excellence. Dr Furuya will also present innovative training methods that combine scientific insights with traditional practice to enhance the physical realisation of artistic intentions. A highlight of this lecture is a world premiere: the presentation of an analysis of certain biomechanical characteristics of Martha Argerich’s touch with regard to precision and dynamics.
