THE ENSEMBLE
This ensemble brings together musicians whose connections to music and to each other are wide-ranging: longtime friends and new acquaintances, younger and older musicians, former colleagues from major Hamburg orchestras, students and ambitious amateurs. Here, professional expertise and a love of making music together are combined with social commitment.
SMALL CIRCLE – HIGH LEVEL
Initiated by a small circle around the conductor Thomas Mittelberger, they are all united by the desire to develop music through concentrated rehearsals in order to present it at a high level.
DIRECTOR: THOMAS MITTELBERGER
After studying in Freiburg and Munich and gaining initial orchestral experience with the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian State Orchestra, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mittelberger was first violinist with the NDR Symphony Orchestra from 1975 to 1998. He performed with several contemporary music ensembles and studied with his string quartet under the LaSalle Quartet. His engagement with historical performance practice led to projects with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, the Johann Christian Bach Academy, and other ensembles using period instruments.
After his orchestral career, Mittelberger studied conducting in Leipzig. He regularly coaches string sections for various orchestras, including the Harvestehude Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra '91. In 2017, he led a youth orchestra project with Arpegio Peru in Trujillo. From 2001 to 2017, he taught violin and chamber music at the Hamburg Conservatory and conducted the orchestra. After retiring from teaching at the Hamburg Conservatory, he founded Nova Consonanza.
