Bruckner with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra has become the stuff of legend, as have the orchestra’s concerts with Marek Janowski. After conducting Wagner, Brahms and Schumann at the Elbphilharmonie in recent years, the renowned specialist in the German Romantic symphonic repertoire now returns with a Bruckner symphony.
Significantly, Janowski, himself a distinguished Wagner conductor, has chosen the great symphonist’s Symphony No. 3, the very work in which Bruckner explicitly paid homage to his idol Richard Wagner. Full of enthusiasm, the »poor organist from Vienna« (as Wagner rather unflatteringly described the composer) travelled to Bayreuth to ask the »master of all masters« in person to accept the dedication of his Third Symphony. While the work met with little more than polite approval from Wagner, it is now regarded as perhaps the first symphony in which Bruckner’s unmistakable individual style emerges fully formed. This is especially true of the final version conducted by Janowski, in which Bruckner removed all explicit quotations from Wagner.
