The Elbe-Werkstätten GmbH theatre ensemble from Hamburg was founded in 1999 by Olga Brandin. Since Moritz Schilk took over as director in 2022, the company has firmly established itself within the tradition of Hamburg's spoken theatre scene, thus occupying a unique position in the German-language theatre landscape. Through its professional work, it sees itself as an ambassador for a more inclusive society – art for culture's sake!
In addition to current productions such as Pilk's "Madhouse" based on Ken Campbell's novel and their ever-popular "Revue à la carte" program, the company is taking on a special challenge this year: a musical performance. For the very first time in its 27-year history, the company's actors are creating a stage piece that combines singing, dancing, and acting. Audiences will see an excerpt from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats." They are not attempting to copy the original, but rather staging the number in their own unique way – in their typically quirky Minotauros style. What presents a particular challenge is the fact that the characters are not human, but animals embodying human traits and characteristics. The performance explores the question: What is human and what is not? in a society striving for inclusion.
