What shoes are traditionally worn with kimono? What should you keep in mind when choosing the right size, and how can you style a modern kimono outfit with everyday shoes?

Kimono Club member Mengqi Wang won’t just be giving a talk—you’ll also have the chance to try on different types of kimono footwear for yourself in the tea room! A pair of authentic maiko okobo, high wooden platform sandals, is on its way and will likely be available to try on that day. Please wear clean socks!

From 7 p.m., internationally renowned kimono expert Sheila Cliffe (@kimonosheila) will join us by video call to introduce her new book, The Kimono Closet. Through the stories of 50 women, the book explores the kimono they own, where they come from, and the memories attached to them. It shows that kimono are not just traditional garments, but personal archives filled with family history, identity, and everyday experience.

After the talk, we’ll gather for a relaxed cup of tea, with the chance to try on kimono or yukata together.

Doors open at around 5:45 p.m., and the talk will begin shortly after 6:00 p.m.

Admission is free; donations are welcome.
