Kimono Club Hamburg Talk: Specialist Knowledge on Bags
Monday, 13/07/2026 / 06:00 PM - 08:30 PM / Planten un Blomen (Teehaus im Japanischen Garten)
- queer friendly
- Free of charge
What kinds of bags are traditionally carried with kimono and yukata? This talk will introduce typical styles such as お座敷籠, ozashiki-kago, a type of basket bag best known from the world of maiko and geiko, as well as 利休バッグ, Rikyu bags, classic and elegant kimono bags with a connection to tea culture.
We will explore how occasion, season, material, shape, and size all influence the choice of bag, and how the right pairing can bring the kimono, obi, and overall styling into balance.
Kimono Club member Mengqi Wang will lead the session and bring along a selection of bags for participants to experience up close. You’ll be able to compare different shapes, materials, and sizes, and see how they work with different kimono and yukata styles.
After the talk, we’ll gather for a relaxed cup of tea, with the chance to try on kimono or yukata together.
Doors open at around 5:45 p.m., and the talk will begin shortly after 6:00 p.m.
Admission is free; donations are welcome.
