Hopscotch is the name of a quintet that plays jazz with an abstract and open sound. Hopscotch is also the name of a suite written by Clémence Manachère, which interprets Daniel Libeskind's ChamberWorks series of drawings. In Libeskind's ChamberWorks, Clémence found a synthesis between architectural drawing and contemporary musical notation, precise and chaotic at the same time. Following this, the structural logic of the Hopscotch suite became a back-and-forth between flowing melodic lines, abstract cycles of repetition, and textures that merge and reverse, creating an alternation between figuration and abstraction. The structure of the ChamberWorks also describes our world: interconnected layers in which phases of conflict and harmonic epiphanies alternate. In these structures, the theme of symmetry and asymmetry is the common thread of the composition. One drum kit is reflected in another, the guitar blends with the cello, and the flute continues into the soprano saxophone.
