GRENZKONTROLLE announce their new EP "PIRATEN" with the single "NEUMARKT". The EP will be released on May 29, 2026, and will be followed by the "HEUTE BIN ICH RELEVANT, MORGEN BIN ICH VERGESSEN" TOUR 2026 at the end of September. The four-member Cologne-based band GRENZKONTROLLE moves between post-punk, political art, and cultural collage. Their stance is as central to their music. Drummer Roza Rot, guitarist Kodia Funk, bassist Schuttland, and singer Don L. Gaspár Ali reflect on the present, make it audible, and attempt to change it. The band aims to make contemporary problems visible and raise awareness of what is happening around us – with the ambition of bringing people together and encouraging them not only to listen but also to take a stand and become active.
At the heart of the new EP "PIRATEN" (Pirates), which will be released digitally on May 29, 2026, and physically on July 10, 2026, lies a clear thematic stance: The title is a reference to the Edelweiss Pirates – a Cologne resistance group during the Nazi era, comprised of young people who actively opposed the regime and were executed for it. The EP thus consciously connects to formative political and historical events and translates them into a contemporary context. Their songs combine personal perspectives with social observations, creating a space where individual experiences and collective memory collide. Their first EP, "EDELWEIẞ" (Edelweiss), already hinted at this exploration – "PIRATEN" takes it further. Musically, the band also navigates this tension, translating their "pressure on their chest" into a sound that blends energetic post-punk with funky elements.
With their first single, "NEUMARKT," the band focuses on a central location in Cologne, a daily traffic hub for many and simultaneously a reflection of social reality. The starting point is singer Don L. Gaspár Ali's personal connection to this place, which he has known since his school days. "I changed trains there every day to get to school. I used to feel like the people there were just older – now it seems like they're getting younger and younger," he describes. A narrative emerges between memories and the present. The song transforms these observations into a direct image of urban and societal change. Musically, this perspective coalesces into a close connection between lyrics and instrumental – raw, honest, and deliberately reduced to the essentials. In the accompanying video by Felix Aaron, we experience the band at the very location described in the song. Entangled in absurd scenarios, the band's lament for Cologne's Neumarkt and its surroundings is conveyed.
This summer, GRENZKONTROLLE will play a variety of festivals and support Sleaford Mods before embarking on the "HEUTE BIN ICH RELEVANT, MORGEN BIN ICH VERGESSEN" TOUR 2026 at the end of September, which will take them through Germany.
