BECAUSE EVEN IN THESE TIMES SOMEONE HAS TO DO THE RIGHT THING, SIMPLY BECAUSE IT IS RIGHT. April 1945. Everyone senses that the war and the terrible ideology of the National Socialists are nearing their end. But on the night of April 28-29, 1945, two days before Hitler's suicide, the darkest chapter in the history of the then-young town of Penzberg in Bavaria unfolds. For while the mayor, once deposed by the Nazis, moves back into the town hall, the Wehrmacht issues the order to execute all resistance fighters immediately. And caught in the crossfire are the young people Marie, Schorsch, and Gustl.
This story must be told – now! (Hamburger Morgenpost)
Kirsten Boie meticulously researched and reconstructed the Penzberg murders and their background. She names both perpetrators and victims, adhering closely to the facts, events, and testimonies compiled in the court records. Like the novel, the play presents the protagonists in a mosaic of short scenes, developing their goals and decisions through concise dialogue. Dramatic situations are summarized in brief sentences, condensing the entire narrative. Not a single sentence is superfluous; time unfolds breathlessly, urgently, and with ever-increasing suspense.
Kirsten Boie's literary plea for peace. Awarded the Catholic Children's and Young Adult Book Prize and the German Youth Literature Prize, DARK NIGHT is now making its way to the theatre stage.
