Please note: due to a last-minute change in personnel, the Doric String Quartet has had to cancel the concert. An excellent replacement has been found in the form of the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam.
What is the true nature of music, and what worlds do we discover within the notes? With these questions in mind, the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam plays its way through the entire repertoire – from the Renaissance to the present day. With insatiable curiosity and great enthusiasm, the four musicians throw themselves into the music: they perform early music on period instruments, approach the classical repertoire with a fresh perspective, and expand their repertoire with exciting commissioned works.
Mozart’s »Prussian Quartet« No. 1 is an absolute classic in which the cello, in particular, takes centre stage – rather than merely accompanying, it plays a leading role and lends this gallant quartet a warm tone. This device gives the quartet a concertante character, with the first violin providing a delightful counterpoint to the cello.
Dmitri Shostakovich’s Fifth String Quartet has an almost symphonic quality. The three movements alternate between rhythmically effervescent and lyrical passages – transitions link the movements together to form a grand structure. With his 15 quartets, Shostakovich has left behind a monumental body of work for the world of chamber music; they have quickly become part of the standard repertoire. Each one feels as though the composer is, for a moment, turning his inner world inside out – a world he had to conceal throughout his life from the harsh regime of the Soviet Union.
The first movement, »Strange Oscillations«, from Joey Roukens’ string quartet »What Remains« offers a fascinating contrast. Mechanical rhythms and interlocking sonic cogs, punctuated by wistful lines, drive the music forward inexorably, building to an increasingly feverish cacophony.
