“Do you love chocolate and enjoy riding your bike to school? And do you know where chocolate and the rubber for your bike tires come from?”
In 2022, Wangari Grace – an internationally renowned storyteller – and Hamburg-based musician Sven Kacirek developed a musical oral history performance about the colonial period from 1870 to 1960. The story was told from the perspective of different African cultures. A sequel focused more strongly on the impact of colonialism on the present day. Now, Kacirek, together with Wangari and illustrator Dan Yessa, has published the book "Colonialsim - How Afrika fought back." To mark the book's release, we are presenting a German-language version of this storytelling performance, featuring German-Ghanaian actress Charity Collin and accompanied by an exhibition of Dan Yessa's illustrations. The format was deliberately chosen, as oral tradition was the most popular method on the African continent for passing on knowledge and experience from one generation to the next before the colonial powers took control. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the story is told in a child-friendly and thoughtful manner.
