Reading / Harbor Front Literature Festival 2026.
Leaving everything behind! Pushing boundaries! Finally being free! – that's what a young woman wants at any cost. And via Bali and Berlin, she arrives at the ideal place for con artists and anyone who wants to reach for the stars: St. Moritz, and indeed, "1999 meters above sea level"! There, with her bright orange hair, she suddenly finds herself among the rich and beautiful, posing as an artist. For a long time, it feels surprisingly good, if it weren't for that handsome man with the ice-blue eyes...
Caroline Wahl was a resounding success at the Harbour Front Literature Festival 2025: During the NDR podcast "Eat Read Sleep" at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, the entire audience was on their feet by the end. And anyone hoping to snag a ticket for her reading the following day at "Uebel und Gefährlich" was out of luck.
The joy is all the greater, then, that Caroline Wahl is once again making a tour stop in Hamburg with her new novel and returning to the Harbour Front Literature Festival. She will present "1999 Meters Above Sea Level" to the Hamburg audience for the first time at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus.
"1999 Meters Above Sea Level" is a wild rollercoaster ride through life. A story oscillating between despair and comedy, and incidentally, a portrait of our times.
"The author clearly demonstrates: She is a young woman and she has everything in her hands. That is her message."
– Süddeutsche Zeitung
Caroline Wahl, born in Mainz in 1995 and raised near Heidelberg, studied German Studies and German Literature in Tübingen and Berlin. Her debut novel, "22 Bahnen" (22 Lanes), was an immediate and extraordinary success in 2023, winning numerous awards and being adapted for film. Further successes followed with "Windstärke 17" (Force 17) and "Die Assistentin" (The Assistant): with a total of three million books sold in three years, Caroline Wahl is now considered one of the most important voices in contemporary German-language literature. "1999 Meter über dem Meer" (1999 Meters Above the Sea) is her fourth novel.
