With the special exhibition *Bertil Vallien – A Journey Through Light, Time, and Memory*, the Glass Museum presents an impressive showcase of the extraordinary work of renowned Swedish glass artist Bertil Vallien. The exhibition offers a gateway into his enigmatic visual worlds, inviting visitors to pause, uncover their own memories, and perceive the invisible within the visible.
For over six decades, Vallien has explored the potential of glass as a medium, developing a distinctive artistic language. His sculptures speak of memory and transience, dream and reality—and of the fundamental questions of human existence.
Vallien gained international acclaim primarily for his pioneering work using the sand-casting technique, which has left an enduring mark on the art of glass. His pieces appear as artifacts from a bygone civilization, yet simultaneously as messages from the deepest recesses of the human psyche. They preserve memories, experiences, and stories within a material that absorbs, transforms, and uniquely reveals light.
Among his most well-known works are his mysterious boats, which serve as symbols of departure, transition, and the human journey through time and memory. Furthermore, series such as *Heads* and *Dreams* offer fascinating glimpses into inner worlds; here, heads become landscapes of consciousness where past and future, dream and reality converge.
A pivotal moment in Vallien’s creative process is the casting itself: as molten, glowing glass flows into prepared sand molds, a world is briefly brought into being—one that only fully reveals itself as it slowly cools. Liquid fire is transformed into a permanent form; a fleeting instant becomes a memory. Today, his works are held in the collections of some of the world’s most renowned museums—including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Louvre in Paris. In addition to his independent artistic work, Vallien designed thousands of glass and design objects for the celebrated glass manufacturer Kosta Boda. His public work is equally impressive; since the 1960s, he has created monumental installations for museums, universities, churches, opera houses, airports, and public buildings.
