With his new, self-titled album, Albrecht Schrader has once again created a piece of music that seeks its own unique resonance. Known for his stylish blend of timeless pop sound and contemporary lyrics, the Hamburg native proves himself once again—not without humor, but certainly without cynicism—as a composer and lyricist with a keen sense of his time, and to some extent, of the time before it. It is, in the best sense of the word, unpretentiously pleasant music, if such a thing still exists. And a perfectly formed highlight in the artist's discography to date.
For on his fifth studio album, the dauphin of German-language songwriters masterfully navigates the entire spectrum of musical composition. His past as an orchestra conductor is audible in the artfully crafted, well-balanced arrangements. Even though it's a dwindling genre in the local music scene, Schrader proves that organic sounds, real instruments, real voices without autotune, and tracks played at normal speed can release just as much dopamine. Listening to his music evokes a very special kind of satisfaction. Perhaps it's the cohesiveness, perhaps the harmonies, or some secret third element that Albrecht Schrader will never reveal, or only in exclusive interviews for a hefty fee. The fact is, there's no one else like him in this country.
“Albrecht Schrader” begins with a sublime chord. “The Music Begins” starts, and what follows are nine more songs. Ten is undoubtedly the ideal number of tracks for an album; attentive listeners will have noticed this in previous releases. Where his last record was almost a disco moment, Schrader now returns to the craft of pop, classically instrumented with piano, warm synths, and rather soft drums—actually even softer than “Soft” from 2023. Schrader has retained his joy in beautiful sound. And with each new release, it seems to grow even stronger. The upbeat “What Love Is Still Worth,” the bittersweet “Twenty Years of Nicotine,” or the leisurely “I Read Something Into It” about the ambiguities of interpersonal encounters— Albrecht Schrader is either the most sophisticated in the pub or the most rocking in the concert hall, and both suit him perfectly.
Nevertheless, “Albrecht Schrader” also speaks of a kind of worldly melancholy, always staying on the bright side of life, even in moments of doubt. Like in “Ist Musik noch unser Ding” (Is Music Still Our Thing?), the almost hymnal class anthem of current German pop misfits with an existential crisis. Alongside Schrader, you can hear Saskia Lavaux, Das Paradies, Resi Reiner, Rocko Schamoni, Malonda, Nicola Rost, and finally Dirk von Lowtzow. So, is music still their thing? The question posed by the final chorus remains unanswered. What remains is the eulogy and the quiet certainty that there isn't much better out there to defy the storms of the present. In this sense , “Albrecht Schrader” is also music for music, a bow to its own craft.
The catchy lyrics only reveal their meta-level after the third time you hum along, so skillfully does Schrader weave his small, sometimes cheerful, sometimes melancholic observations of everyday life into his audience. As if he had signed some kind of chivalric code of honor, his linguistic barbs are so finely aimed that the afflicted, for example, the city of Hamburg (“I’m not sure if that’s Hamburg’s fault”), might even be flattered at first. That’s just how it is with multifaceted art. It can be enjoyed in many ways. Yes, Albrecht Schrader rebels while sitting down. But not out of laziness, but rather out of the shrewd foresight that he can sustain it longer. And because that’s how he can play the piano best.
