SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Mogwai
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Thirty years is often an eternity in pop history. For Scottish band=0D=0AMogwai, however, it feels more like a continuous movement: a steady=0D=0Aswelling, ebbing, and renewed surge of sound. Since the mid-1990s, the=0D=0Amusicians from Glasgow have been crafting monumental instrumental=0D=0Apieces that are more landscape than song. Vast, darkly shimmering=0D=0Asoundscapes in which guitars suddenly swell into storms and just as=0D=0Aabruptly fall back into silence. =0D=0A=0D=0AIt all began in 1996 with the single »Tuner,« released on the=0D=0Aband’s own label, Rock Action Records. What was initially intended=0D=0Aas a pragmatic DIY solution—releasing their own music=0D=0Athemselves—developed over the years into a permanent institution of=0D=0Athe independent British scene. More than 150 releases have now=0D=0Aappeared on Rock Action, with bands such as Arab Strap and The=0D=0ATwilight Sad finding a home here. To mark its 30th anniversary, the=0D=0Aband has now released a new video for »Tuner« – edited together=0D=0Afrom previously unreleased archive material spanning three decades of=0D=0Athe band’s history. It shows young musicians in smoky clubs, tour=0D=0Abuses on endless roads, and finally a band that has long since become=0D=0Aone of the most influential voices in post-rock. Even though Mogwai=0D=0Athemselves have always been uncomfortable with this genre label. =0D=0A=0D=0AEleven studio albums later, their sound remains unmistakable. Brutal=0D=0Awalls of guitar, fragile electronics, interspersed with moments of=0D=0Aalmost painful beauty. With the album »As The Love Continues,« the=0D=0Aband finally reached commercial heights: number one in the British=0D=0Acharts, a nomination for the Mercury Prize. Their latest work, »The=0D=0ABad Fire,« picks up where they left off, while sounding rougher and=0D=0Amore immediate. Producer John Congleton has given the familiar Mogwai=0D=0Acosmos a more edgy surface—synthesizers flash like neon lights,=0D=0Aguitars scratch and shimmer, while the pieces continue to unfold with=0D=0Athe patient dramaturgy that has become the band’s trademark.=0D=0A=0D=0ABut if you really want to understand Mogwai, you have to experience=0D=0Athem live. Their concerts are like physically palpable sound rituals,=0D=0Awith layers of guitar sound building up for minutes on end until the=0D=0Aroom begins to vibrate. Then suddenly there is a moment of calm, as if=0D=0Asomeone were dimming the lights before the next wave rolls in. Hardly=0D=0Aany other band masters this dynamic so masterfully.=0D=0A=0D=0AMogwai has teamed up with PLUS1 to support War Child. €1 from every=0D=0Aticket sold helps War Child protect, educate, and stand up for the=0D=0Arights of children affected by war.=0D=0A=0D=0APERFORMERS=0D=0A=0D=0AMOGWAI band=0D=0A=0D=0ASUPPORT: FOREST SWORDS=0D=0A
