SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Step Into Dabke – Dance Workshop
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Images of joyous weddings and celebrations across the Arab world, with=0D=0Apeople dancing in circles or lines, are familiar to many. This is=0D=0ADabke – a dance distinguished by its virtuosic, stamping steps and=0D=0Arecognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2023. As part=0D=0Aof the »Lebanon« festival=0D=0A[https://www.elbphilharmonie.de/en/festivals/lebanon/2653] at the=0D=0AElbphilharmonie, participants aged 16 and above can now learn their=0D=0Afirst Dabke steps for themselves. =0D=0ADabke has been danced for centuries throughout Bilad al-Sham, the=0D=0Ahistorical region of Greater Syria encompassing present-day Palestine,=0D=0ASyria, Jordan and Lebanon. It is thought to have originated from the=0D=0Apractice of compacting clay on rooftops. People would stamp in rhythm=0D=0Awhile holding on to one another’s shoulders, providing support=0D=0Awhenever the clay gave way beneath them. Today, Dabke encompasses a=0D=0Awide variety of lively steps danced in lines or circles. A lead dancer=0D=0Atypically sets the pace and movements – and men and women alike=0D=0Aembrace the dance with equal enthusiasm.=0D=0A=0D=0AElbphilharmonie PLUS=0D=0A[https://www.elbphilharmonie.de/en/whats-on/epplus/] is a programme=0D=0Athat opens up different ways of looking at the music performed at the=0D=0AElbphilharmonie – either to supplement a concert, or as an=0D=0Aexperience in its own right. Interdisciplinary encounters and=0D=0Aexhibitions form part of the Elbphilharmonie PLUS programme, as do=0D=0Aconcert talks and films shown in museums, libraries, cinemas and=0D=0Acommunity centres.=0D=0A=0D=0APERFORMERS=0D=0A=0D=0AYALLADABKA Workshop=0D=0A
