SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Mahler Academy Orchestra / Philipp von Steinaecker
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:»It felt as though Gustav Mahler himself had briefly returned to the=0D=0Avery building in which he once conducted this work several times,«=0D=0Aenthused the newspaper Trouw about the Mahler Academy Orchestra’s=0D=0Aambitious historically informed performance project. Together with=0D=0Atheir director Philipp von Steinaecker, musicians from some of the=0D=0Aworld’s leading orchestras have joined forces to bring the original=0D=0Asound of Mahler’s monumental symphonies back to life.=0D=0A=0D=0ATo achieve this, they gather each year in Dobbiaco, where the composer=0D=0Asought inspiration for his late works, and approach the soundscape of=0D=0Athe fin de siècle on period instruments. This season, they turn to=0D=0AMahler’s Ninth Symphony, his final completed major work before the=0D=0Aso-called »curse of the ninth« struck him as well. Since Beethoven,=0D=0Athe Ninth Symphony has been regarded as a composer’s final symphonic=0D=0Astatement; like Mahler, Franz Schubert, Anton Bruckner and Antonín=0D=0ADvořák never completed a tenth.=0D=0A=0D=0AMahler firmly believed in this curse and was, quite literally,=0D=0Aterrified of death. Arnold Schoenberg also mythologised the idea:=0D=0A»Those who have written a Ninth stood too close to the beyond.=0D=0APerhaps the riddles of this world would be solved if one of those who=0D=0Aknow them were to write a Tenth. And that is perhaps not meant to=0D=0Abe.« Mahler, too, never reached that point – he died while working=0D=0Aon sketches for his Symphony No. 10.=0D=0A=0D=0APERFORMERS=0D=0A=0D=0AMAHLER ACADEMY ORCHESTRA orchestra=0D=0A=0D=0APHILIPP VON STEINAECKER conductor=0D=0A=0D=0APROGRAM=0D=0A=0D=0AGUSTAV MAHLER=0D=0ASymphony No. 9=0D=0A=0D=0AThe concert takes place without an interval.=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A
