SUMMARY;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Photo: Hans Hansen
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:With the exhibition “Photo: Hans Hansen”, the MK&G is devoting a=0D=0Alarge-scale retrospective to one of the leading photographers in=0D=0Apost-war Germany. From 17 April to 1 November 2026, viewers will be=0D=0Aable to discover around 220 iconic photographs from a career spanning=0D=0Aover six decades. In international ad campaigns for companies=0D=0Aincluding Lufthansa, Nikon, Volkswagen and Erco, Hans Hansen=0D=0Arevolutionised product photography starting in the 1960s with images=0D=0Athat would shape the collective visual memory of entire generations.=0D=0AComplementing examples from these campaigns are images created in=0D=0Aclose collaboration with designers such as Tapio Wirkkala.=0D=0APublications, sketches and archival material as well as selected=0D=0Aobjects from Hansen’s own private collection provide deeper insights=0D=0Ainto his world. His most recent series, “Analog” (2024), also=0D=0Ahighlights Hansen’s distinctive clean-cut and minimalist visual=0D=0Alanguage.=0D=0A=0D=0AWhile the world outside the photographer’s studio has been=0D=0Aconstantly changing over the past 60 years, inside, an unvarying order=0D=0Aprevails: A place for everything and everything in its place. In his=0D=0A“still lifes”, Hansen reduces objects to their essence, arranging,=0D=0Abreaking down and structuring their shapes, colours and materials. In=0D=0Ahis photos, they take on a timeless air. One of the best-known=0D=0Aexamples is the photograph of a Volkswagen Golf (1988) that has been=0D=0Adismantled into some 7,000 individual parts.=0D=0A=0D=0AHansen’s works bear an unmistakable signature, focusing the gaze=0D=0Awith radical clarity on the everyday world of things and design. At=0D=0Athe same time, the photographer continually searches for new pictorial=0D=0Asolutions. Light and shadow, composition and perspective are the=0D=0Acentral parameters and elementary means with which he calls into=0D=0Aquestion the very nature of photography.=0D=0A
