In 1946, farmhand Jan (Peter Quade) and maid Taline (Bianca Kleinschmidt) are about to celebrate their 25th anniversary on the Herkenhof, which they have received with the help of refugee girl Marie (Mareike Lüdersen). Heiko (Robin Miethe), the young farmer who has returned home, doesn't care about work, secretly distills liquor and does black market business. He wastes his time with the easy-going Helga (Maren Liebschner), daughter of local policeman Fiete Hillmer (Dieter Buhmann), who would like to be his wife but doesn't want to work. Jan and Heiko have always survived inspections for illegal distilling well. But when Fiete announces a complete overhaul, they move their distillery to an old alcove.
Heiko promises to marry the woman who cleans and mucks out the stables. Helga is outraged, but Taline agrees. Taline has done everything and now insists on the promise of marriage. Heiko is in trouble! The village laughs because he has to marry the maid.
