Uelzen pflanzt Bäume - Baumpflanzaktion bei Westerweyhe

  • Free of charge

Invitation to a joint tree planting campaign by the Hanseatic City of Uelzen together with the Uelzen City Forest under the patronage of Mayor Jürgen Markwardt.

On Saturday, November 15, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., a coniferous forest area near Westerweyhe, which was destroyed by drought and bark beetle infestation, will be qualitatively upgraded with climate-adapted deciduous trees - with the aim of better preparing the urban forest for climate change and potential extreme weather events such as drought and wind.

Participation is free of charge. Food and drink will be provided.

Where?

Planting area in the Barnser Weg woodland, approximately 2 km from the Ebstorfer Straße/Barnser Weg hiking car park towards the airport. Directions can be found at https://www.hansestadt-uelzen.de/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-497/723_read-16446/.

Mayor Jürgen Markwardt, patron of the planting campaign, and Westerweyhe's mayor, Karl-Heinz Günther, will be joined by Thomas Göllner, head of the municipal forestry department, at 2 p.m. to welcome the participants and kick off the "Uelzen Plants" campaign. Before the guided work begins with spades and seedlings, Thomas Göllner, who is already in the "second generation" of converting Uelzen's municipal forest into a mixed forest, will deliver a keynote speech on the topic of "Forests in Climate Change." He will share his insights from his daily practice and explain the challenges forest habitats face in the face of changing climatic conditions (drought, rising average temperatures, an increase in storms, etc.) and why the increasing rainfall in Lower Saxony is also damaging the forests during the leafless winter.

On Friday morning, the third-grade students of Westerweyhe Elementary School will be out in the planting area under the guidance of the municipal forestry department, helping to make the forest more adaptable. The students will learn a lot about the forest ecosystem and receive a certificate for their efforts.

Collective action for local climate protection – everyone takes responsibility.

A joint effort by Uelzen City Forestry, Climate Protection Management, and the Department of Green Spaces and Environment. Catering was kindly provided by the Heideblume Club of 1910 Westerweyhe eV.
