Byron Katie discovered that she suffered when she believed her thoughts and that she did not suffer when she did not believe those thoughts.
The cause of her depression at the time was not the world around her, but her beliefs and preconceived notions about the world around her. In a flash of insight, she realized that in our search for happiness, we are heading in the wrong direction.
Instead of embarking on the hopeless endeavor of trying to change the world to fit our own preconceived notions of how it "should" be, we can question these notions, and by encountering reality as it is, we experience unimaginable freedom and joy. As a result, a bedridden, suicidal woman was filled with love for all that life brings.
This evening can only be an introduction to the topic. It is a wonderful method that can lead everyone to greater independence.
