The little mermaid

A musical fairy tale by John Høybye Text by Hans Christian Andersen and Edward Broadbridge German text version by Reinhild Köhncke from 5 years Premiere

The little mermaid saves a prince from drowning and falls in love with him. But in order to marry him, she has to become a human - and she has to put up with a lot. The sea witch gives her two human legs in exchange for her fish tail. However, the little mermaid has to give up her tongue as the price for this transformation. From then on, she can no longer speak and her unfamiliar legs and feet hurt badly. When the prince sees the now human mermaid for the first time, he is fascinated by her and takes her in. But he does not recognize his former rescuer in her. If the prince marries someone else, the mermaid is threatened with death ...

Danish composer John Høybye has created a modern cantata that combines classical choral music with elements of gospel and jazz. Høybye's music is particularly accessible to a young audience. It speaks to listeners in an emotional way and allows them to experience the story on an immediate, intuitive level. In this production, the mermaid is played by an actress and a narrator guides the audience through the story. Music is provided by the Mecklenburg State Theater Opera Chorus and a string quintet from the ranks of the Mecklenburg State Orchestra Schwerin.
