Symphoniker Hamburg / Martha Argerich / Paweł Kapuła

Please note: Paweł Kapuła will conduct the concert, as Han-Na Chang had to cancel her performance due to illness. The program remains unchanged.

A Russian programme – powerful, virtuosic and deeply moving: At the heart of the programme is Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, which for decades has been one of Martha Argerich’s signature works. Premiered in 1921, it is his most popular piano concerto, captivating listeners with its clear architecture, unmistakable humor and the typically Prokofievian blend of edgy modernity and melodic immediacy.

The programme opens with the »Märchenpoem« (Fairy Tale Poem) by Sofia Gubaidulina, composed fifty years later. Her compositional path was once encouraged by Dmitri Shostakovich and until her death in 2025 she created music of unmistakable power. In 2026 she would have celebrated her 95th birthday. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6, full of striking contrasts, brings the concert to a close in the second half. Virtuously shifting between drama and irony, it unites intense emotions, inner conflicts and a sense of dance-like lightness.
