Gioachino Rossini is particularly famous for his operas – from the »Barber of Seville« to »Wilhelm Tell« and »La Cenerentola«. However, the Italian composer claimed his extremely successful opera career had ended before he was 40 years old. There followed numerous short works and, in a sense as the culmination, the »Petite Messe Solennelle«. Thomas Hengelbrock and the Balthasar Neumann ensembles, equally excellent in opera and sacred music, are the perfect line-up for this mass setting described as »small« in the composer’s typical self-mockery.
