Reading and discussion with the author Grit Poppe
"Deported, banished, disappeared - German war youth in Stalin's camps and prisons"

The Bündnis 90/Die Grünen/Die PARTEI parliamentary group in the Schwerin city council invites you to a reading followed by a discussion in the Demmler Hall of Schwerin Town Hall. Admission is free.

The author Grit Poppe will present her non-fiction book "Verschleppt, verbannt, verschwunden - Deutsche Kriegsjugend in Stalins Lagern und Gefängnissen", which she wrote together with Niklas Poppe. The book is dedicated to a chapter of German post-war history that has long received little attention: the fate of German youths and young adults who were arrested by Soviet authorities after the end of the Second World War and deported to camps or prisons.

Based on eyewitness accounts, documents and historical research, the authors trace moving life stories and at the same time take a differentiated look at the political and historical background to these repressions. The book makes it clear how deeply these experiences shaped the lives of those affected and why their stories should still be heard today.

Grit Poppe is an award-winning author whose literary and documentary works often deal with contemporary German history and in particular with experiences in the GDR. Together with Niklas Poppe, historian and author, she combines journalistic research with narrative proximity to contemporary witnesses.

Following the reading, there will be an opportunity to talk to the author and exchange ideas.
