Heavy metal was one of the biggest subcultures in the GDR, but in contrast to punk, it later received less attention in the GDR reappraisal. However, the Stasi also closely monitored the heavy metal scene. Numerous files and images on this topic are available in the Federal Archive - Stasi Records Archive. The files paint a picture of many small breaches of taboo, such as long hair, conspicuous clothing or loud music. The State Security tried to categorize the scene and determine whether it posed a threat to the state order of the GDR.
In her lecture on Saturday, May 30, 2026, Madlen Richter from the Federal Archive - Stasi Records Archive Dresden will deal with the topic "Provocation in everyday socialist life - the Stasi's view of the metal scene in the GDR". In addition to the lecture, there will be a guided tour of the archive. There will also be the opportunity to apply for access to Stasi documents. A valid identity document is required for this.
