Open Monument Day 2026 — at the SSGK buildings



Experience History, Discover Connections

History is full of connections: Under the theme “NetzWERKE: Monuments & Infrastructure,”“Open Monument Day” on Sunday, September 13, 2026, invites visitors to discover historic sites from new perspectives. The State Palaces, Gardens, and Art Collections of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (SSGK M-V) will also open their doors and offer insights into the history, architecture, and art of their properties. Through guided tours, lectures, music, historical games, and creative and family activities, visitors can experience special historic sites and trace the connections between people, places, and eras.

Admission and the program are free on this day.

PROGRAM:


BOTHMER CASTLE
Opening hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

12 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Tour guides provide insights into various chapters of Bothmer Castle’s history—from stucco and architectural history to Lord Bothmer’s life in London and the entailed lords, through to the GDR era and the history of the park with its Festoon Avenue.
5:00 p.m.: Lecture by Steffen Siefert in the ballroom: “300 Years Since Construction Began on Bothmer Castle”

All day: Creative activities, a craft station, a children’s library, and Baroque-themed games in the museum education rooms.


SCHWERIN CASTLE MUSEUM
Opening hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m.: Public tours on the construction of Schwerin Castle in the mid-19th century and its significance as the representative seat of power for the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
2 p.m.: Special public tour “The Dankberg Frieze in the Billiard Room” focusing on this extraordinary work of art from the Historicist period and its humorous, allegorical imagery.

In the museum’s educational program, visitors of all ages can get creative under the motto “Discover, Create, Participate.”


LUDWIGSLUST PALACE
Opening hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

1:00 p.m.: Guided tour “From Hunting Lodge to Royal Residence”

1:30 p.m.: Family tour on life at the court of
2:00 p.m.: Guided tour “He was placed on the throne by God so that he might work, not idle away his time”


MIROW CASTLE

Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

11:00 a.m.: Themed tour “Queen Charlotte”—follow in the footsteps of the English queen, who was born in Mirow, through the palace.

12 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Baroque game course featuring historical and innovative wooden games in the castle coach house.

HOHENZIERITZ CASTLE

Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Luise Memorial at Hohenzieritz Castle invites you to Open Monument Day. On this day, the Luise Memorial can be visited free of charge.


GRANITZ HUNTING CASTLE
Opening hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

10:30 a.m.: Guided tour on the building’s history and restoration

11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.: “Sound in the Tower” with the Gingst hunting horn players

1:30 p.m.: “Art in Form—From the Brave Metal Knight to the Graceful Marble Artemis”

Note: Due to space limitations, the number of participants for the guided tours is limited to 20 people.


SCHWERIN STATE MUSEUM

Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

11:00 a.m.: Margret Schmal: “The New Galleries” and the exhibitions on the ground floor
12:00 p.m.: Kathrin Sykora: “Oudry’s Fascinating Animal World” featuring the life-size rhinoceros Clara

2:00 p.m.: Andreas Baumgart: “Historical Imitation Techniques” in the museum building
