Once upon a time there was a border...

The emergence and passing of the German-German border from Priwall to the Elbe

in the courtroom of Rehna Monastery

01.10. - 11.10.2024

The traveling exhibition "Once upon a time there was a border..." was developed by the GRENZHUS Schlagsdorf and was first shown at the GRENZHUS 25 years after reunification and has since been shown at various locations. From October 1 - 11, 2024, it will be on display in the courtroom of Rehna Monastery during regular opening hours.

November 9, 1989 has gone down in world history as the day the Wall came down. On the German-German border that separated today's Mecklenburg from Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, not only in Berlin, people took their fate into their own hands and ensured that the border fortifications, which had become almost insurmountable, were opened.

Kuno Karls has collected numerous photos and eyewitness accounts that remind us of the moving time when the border was opened. The photos were taken almost exclusively by amateur photographers who were eyewitnesses to the events. With their pictures, they tell of both the major events at the border and the small, quiet border openings that received little national attention. The exhibition brings the events of 35 years ago back to life and invites people to engage in cross-generational discussions.

The exhibition project was funded by the State Center for Political Education M-V.
