An evening of exceptional intensity and pure expressiveness: at the Martha Argerich Festival Hamburg, art song and chamber music come together in the Small Hall of the Laeiszhalle.
The evening opens with a fireworks display of pianistic brilliance: Mauricio Vallina performs Johann Sebastian Bach’s soaring »Air« in Alexander Siloti’s arrangement, as well as Johannes Brahms’s poetic »Album Leaf« and his sparkling »Paganini Variations.« With Maurice Ravel’s Violin Sonata No. 2, Adrian Iliescu and Szymon Nehring engage in a fascinating dialogue between clarity, rhythm, and jazz-like echoes, before Eugène Ysaÿe’s Solo Sonata No. 5 unfolds its full expressive depth in the hands of Yuzuko Horigome.
After the intermission, a highlight of the art of the song: Robert Schumann’s »Dichterliebe« with mezzo-soprano star Magdalena Kožená and Martha Argerich—a touching interplay of voice and piano that goes straight to the heart.
