"Lost Gardens - Of gardens that have disappeared and been rediscovered"
Saturday, 02/11/2024 / 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM / Stadtbibliothek Schwerin
Lecture with Antje Peters-Reimann
Growth, change and decay: Gardens are one of man's more ephemeral creations. All their components, not only the plants but also their other design elements such as paths, sculptures and water features, have one thing in common: if they are not permanently maintained, the green paradises quickly revert to the state they were in before man devoted himself to their design. Little more than rumors have survived of some gardens, while others are still known to us through pictures or contemporary travel reports.
The lecture sets off on a search for forgotten garden art - wandering through gardens such as the famous Medici garden Pratolino at the height of its splendor - today only sad relics remind us of its former glory. The Malmaison park of the French Empress Joséphine will be resurrected before the eyes of the audience. The magnificent baroque gardens of Gottorf Castle in Schleswig-Holstein and the legendary Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, on the other hand, have been restored to their former glory and thus rescued from oblivion.
Garden historian and journalist Antje Peters-Reimann has published a book of the same name on the subject of 'Lost Gardens'. It was awarded the German Garden Book Prize in 2023.
