A young woman steals the ashes of her deceased boyfriend to spread them in the mountains. But a fatal car accident sends her and her clique straight into a Bavarian afterlife authority, where absurd bureaucracy decides their fates. However, the deceased is not willing to accept this; she gets a job as an intern with the janitor of the authority and seeks ways to return to Earth. The coming-to-death comedy feels somewhat overloaded due to the complexities of its love story. Nevertheless, the combination of subdued Wes Anderson aesthetics and a playful ensemble of actors convincingly delivers a visually striking comedy about death, love, and self-determination with much wit.
