LINSE Filmkunst: Amrum

Amrum

Coming-of-Age Film

Directed by: Fatih Akin

starring: Jasper Billerbeck (Nanning) · Laura Tonke (Hille Hagener) · Lisa Hagmeister (Aunt Ena) · Kian Köppke (Hermann) · Lars Jessen (Grandpa Arjan)

A twelve-year-old boy tries to obtain a piece of white bread with butter and honey for his mother in the last days of the war on the North Sea island of Amrum, for which he has to barter the rare ingredients with the islanders. During his journey, he notices how deeply the ideological division separates the people. The film, based on the childhood memories of Hark Bohm, thrives on its atmospheric images and a concise ensemble of actors. The cruelty of the war years and the atrocities of the Nazi regime only flicker on the margins. As a narrative engagement with National Socialism, it therefore works only to a limited extent, but as a light-hearted, atmospherically filmed youth film, it is quite successful.
