The coin hoard of Gorschendorf, Mecklenburg Lake District, from the middle of the 13th century
For the next evening lecture before the summer break, the Archaeological Open-Air Museum Groß Raden and its Friends invite you to Wednesday, April 5, at 7:30 pm, in the exhibition building of the museum. Dr. Heiko Schäfer (Stralsund) will speak about the medieval coin hoard of Gorschendorf. By fortunate circumstances it could be completely recovered - ideal conditions to gain new insights into medieval coinage.
Which coins were used to pay in Mecklenburg in the middle of the 13th century? Some coin treasures recovered a long time ago provide information about this and shape the current state of knowledge. In 2018, a new coin treasure was discovered in Gorschendorf, Mecklenburg Lake District. The treasure vessel was filled with 2,403 silver coins. As the find was found on Mecklenburg soil, already known coins from Mecklenburg dominate, as expected, but to the great surprise, much is also unknown. The spectrum of coin types minted in Mecklenburg was therefore significantly larger than previously assumed. According to the present state of knowledge, the coin hoard of Gorschendorf was found around 1250. The treasure find with its many new native coin types represents an important mosaic stone for the research of the Mecklenburg coin history of the 13th century. All interested parties are again cordially invited.
