How did my "village" once vote? - Historical elections in Mecklenburg

Presentation of a new digital election atlas (1919 - 1932) with panel discussion

How do democratic elections develop? And what can historical election data reveal about the present? These questions will be the focus of a joint event on June 29, 2026, organized by the State Agency for Civic Education M-V and the Mecklenburg Foundation.

The program, which starts at 6 p.m. in the Schleswig-Holstein-Haus in Schwerin, will begin with the presentation of a newly developed digital atlas on the state elections in Mecklenburg-Schwerin between 1919 and 1932.

Dr. Martin Buchsteiner and Paula Fritsche from the University of Greifswald will show how the regional electoral landscape changed during the years of the Weimar Republic and where there was continuity. The digital election atlas will be activated at the end of the event. It will then be generally accessible via the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Virtual State Museum and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Center for Political Education(www.landesmuseum-mv.de, www.lpb-mv.de).

Following the presentation, experts from the field of political science will discuss key theses arising from the data and its processing. Prof. Hubertus Buchstein, Prof. Wolfgang Muno, Prof. Jochen Müller and Dr. Steffen Schoon ask about the significance of the data for today's developments. They will take a look at current elections and political dynamics in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, consider elections in the field of tension between legitimacy and criticism and also discuss possible alternatives for democratic participation.
The panel will be moderated by Jochen Schmidt.

Admission to the event is free.
