How could the climate change if we “carry on like this”? Or if we master the energy transition quickly and successfully? In which areas of the earth will there be a threat of particularly intense heat, and where will there be more rain? In order to answer such questions, climate researchers are developing models that simulate processes in the atmosphere, ocean and on land. Researchers from all over Germany use the “Levante” supercomputer at the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) for such calculations. Levante is one of the world's 100 fastest supercomputers, as detailed models require an extremely large amount of computing power and storage space.
Michael Böttinger is a geophysicist and specialist in the visualization of the extensive model data; he is also head of public relations at the German Climate Computing Center.
