From Sardana to Pau Casals – The Musical Soul of Catalonia
Saturday, 15/11/2025 / 04:30 PM - 05:30 PM / Elbphilharmonie (Kleiner Saal)
- 5.00€
Catalonia, the region surrounding Barcelona in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula, has always been a little different from the rest of Spain. Catalan identity is reflected in the colourful, imaginative architecture of Antoni Gaudí as well as in the local music scene. It can now be experienced over a long weekend as part of the »Catalunya« festival at the Elbphilharmonie. Beyond the music, a panel discussion on Saturday afternoon offers the opportunity to delve even deeper into the subject matter.
The conversation will be held in English.
The participants in the discussion will be Joan Oller, director of the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, conductor Xavier Puig, who will provide an insight into Catalan musical tradition, music journalist Albert Torrens from Catalan radio, and Maria Lladó from the Ramon Llull Institute, which promotes Catalan language and culture worldwide.
In conversation, they introduce Catalan traditions and explain their special significance for the region: the cobla bands and sardana dances, the human pyramids known as »Castells«, the Catalan language, and famous figures such as the cellist Pau Casals and the singer Montserrat Caballé.
