Ornithological excursion on migratory and resting birds at Faulen See/Rustwerder on the island of Poel and on the Baltic Sea

The island of Poel is embedded in the EU bird sanctuary Wismar Bay and Salzhaff in the northwest of Mecklenburg. The protected area is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas, where EU-wide protected bird species find a refuge.
The area is an experience for nature lovers not only in spring, but also in the winter months. On January 10, 2026 from 9 a.m., Benjamin Weigelt, ornithologist and employee of an expert office in Rostock, invites you to a guided excursion to the island of Poel.
Among others, sea ducks such as eiders, long-tailed ducks and common scoters can be seen on the Baltic Sea. On the surrounding fields, you can expect to see white-fronted geese, white-fronted geese and Canada geese. Swans such as mute swans, whooper swans and little swans can be observed resting. With a bit of luck, Nordic songbirds such as snow buntings, linnets and horned larks can also be observed at this time of year.
