  • for families and kids

An award-winning animated film about the fall of 1989 as seen through a child's eyes

Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Czech Republic 2019
Directors: Ralf Kukula, Matthias Bruhn
Screenplay: Beate Völcker, Péter Palátsik, based on the novel “Fritzi war dabei” by Hanna Schott and Gerda Raidt
Runtime: 88 minutes, FSK: Ages 6 and up, Recommended for ages 9 and up. What

was the fall of the Berlin Wall like? What happened in the GDR before 1989—and afterward? This animated film tells the story from the perspective of thirteen-year-old Fritzi. Her best friend Sophie traveled to Hungary with her parents and defected from there. Why? Fritzi begins to ask questions and, together with her classmate Bela, becomes a witness to these historical events. On top of that, her friend who fled left her dog Sputnik behind. Fritzi decides to return him to her and travel to West Germany to do so. Barbara Felsmann from the Children’s and Youth Film Portal is delighted at how the film “breaks down nuanced historical narrative for children, making it interesting and understandable for a young audience.” We’re looking forward to an animated film that appears to be very richly detailed and are very curious to hear your reactions. As always, Café Wahrheit opens at 2 p.m. Tickets and more are available there. At 7 p.m., the program continues with the DEFA film “Unser kurzes Leben” (Our Short Life), followed by a discussion with Carolin Würfel.
