"Drawn on stone"

    Early lithographs of Mecklenburg

The new special exhibition of the Mecklenburg Foundation traces the first lithographers in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, among whom August Achilles (1798 - 1861) is particularly noteworthy. From the 1820s onwards, Achilles reached a large audience: through his very early city views, including those of Rostock, Doberan and Schwerin, through the reproduction of paintings from the Grand Ducal art collection and also through the depiction of historical events.

The artist's choice of motif, whether the new college building in Schwerin or the racecourse on the Kamp in Doberan, indicates his connection to the ruling dynasty. Achilles' works reveal an extraordinary power of representation through the masterful use of the then still very new lithographic printing technique.
