De Moorkatenoper

from Gerhard Loew

"Dat is alltieds all so wäst, dat de groten Halunken de lütten Halunken ansmiern."

Even though her father preaches the immutability of the world to her, Maleen no longer wants to give in. The death of her brother, who was found shot while poaching, cannot be a coincidence and she refuses to accept the flimsy explanations of the disrespectful forest manager or the sleazy game dealer. The daughter of the poor Fischmeyer family has had enough of the constant starving and ducking in her already very meagre life. Together with her brother's best friend, a poor but naively cheerful tramp, Maleen decides to find the real culprit behind the murder. She does not shy away from confrontation with the authorities.

First performed at the Iberl-Bühne in 1978, Die Grattleroper - as the original version of the morality tale is called - was considered a cult play on Bavarian dialect stages in the 1980s, not least because of its powerful dialog and quirky, almost comical characters. After over 500 sold-out performances at the Bavarian Volkstheater, the blues musical by Gerhard Loew and Peter Michael was recorded for television on ARD, translated into Low German and celebrated great success as the Moorkatenoper at the Ohnsorg Theater. Now we are bringing the story of a poor fishing family to the idyllic open-air museum in Schwerin-Mueß.
