Carmen

Opera by Georges Bizet Libretto: Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy French, with German surtitles

"What you desire will be given to you, life is like an intoxication, because you are free!"

Seductress or pioneer of the sexual revolution? Victim of patriarchal society or symbol of female emancipation? Self-confident or self-destructive woman? Hardly any other opera character is as fascinating as Carmen.

She demands unconditional devotion from the soldier Don José: he should also be prepared to transgress the boundaries of the law. For her, love means freedom. But for him, freedom means insecurity. Don José's feelings are trapped in a society characterized by hierarchies and power. Carmen separates herself from him and remains true to herself until death.

The interplay between love and death, the consequences of freedom, overcoming the fear of the unknown - these aspects of the fascinating story inspire director Anna Weber and her team to create a visually stunning, fantastic world of outlaws and the hunted. The surprising production, which playfully brings the Carmen myth into contact with the vampire myth, is accessible to every generation.
