Not only choir ladies lived in the monastery for centuries, the church and cloister have also been home to bats for 800 years. They live in the niches in the walls, they use the openings in the walls to fly in and out and they find their food in the immediate vicinity of the monastery buildings.
Bats are hunters at dusk and at night. To find their way around, they emit ultrasonic calls and listen for the echo. This is how they find their prey. Bats have been around for 50 million years. There are currently 29 species living in Europe.
